Paper Football Multiplication

We have been polishing out multi-digit multiplication skills in math class. To see some of the different strategies we use, check out our post with tutorials.

To continue practicing in a fun way, we played a game that involves paper footballs, 10-sided dice, and multiplication. (Mr. Salsich made the game up, and it doesn't have a name yet, but it needs one... If you can think of a good name for it, leave your suggestion in a comment.)

Here is a link to the directions, and below is a video of us playing the game in class.

What do you think of the game and the video?

Do you have an idea for what the game should be called?

Any suggestions of other fun math games?

Student Tutorials for Multi-Digit Multiplication

We have been sharpening our multi-digit multiplication skills! In class we made posters to share the different strategies we use to solve these larger multiplication problems. At the end of this post is a slide show with some of our posters.

But first, here are a few video tutorials showing a few of the main strategies. These were made by the students using the Explain Everything app on our iPads. The students did a fantastic job being our first to use the app. They learned a lot, and they will be able to help the rest of the class make even better tutorials as we get more familiar with the app.

Below is a demonstration of the "Box" strategy by Lily:
In the next video, Ivy demonstrates the "standard algorithm" or "stacking" strategy:
And, finally, Ryan gives a demonstration of "changing a number" to make an easier equation"
Thanks again to Lily, Ivy, and Ryan for trying out the app and making our first tutorials! Stay tuned for more videos about division strategies.

Here is the slideshow of some of our posters highlighting more ways to solve 35 x 28:

Welcome!

Welcome to Mr. Salsich's Math Blog for the 2014-2015 school year! This site will be devoted to highlighting student learning, ideas, and math activities throughout the year. I will be posting class videos, pictures, projects, and tutorials that the students have completed.

There is also a "Homework" page with an interactive calendar for keeping up to date on assignments, and a "Resources" page with links to video tutorials and other learning aids.

Thanks for checking out our blog, and feel free to leave comments if something grabs your attention or gets you thinking!
